Favorite Brand Names : Gifts from the Christmas Kitchen

Reviewer: A reader from Washington
I made several recipes in the candy making section of the book and they all turned out great! One of my favorites, which also got rave reviews from friends who received some delicious gifts, was the home-made hot cocoa with tiny marshmallows. It is so good that I no longer buy the canned powdered mixes from the store. This recipe puts them all to shame and it only takes 5 minutes to make! This book has so much variety with the different chapters: cookies, candies, breads, main dishes, etc., it would make a fabulous gift for anyone who enjoys cooking; (even if that's only around the holidays). Give it a try, you won't be disappointed!

Crafter extraordinaire Alexa Lett shows readers how to make everything from potpourri to personal-care products in their very own homes-using readily available ingredients and common kitchen tools. Learn how to make such items as:

Christmas Gifts of Good Taste This is probably one of the best in the "Memories in the Making" Series. I would definitely recommend this book!

Reviewer: A reader from Kentucky
I have owned this book for years and love it. I have used it time and again and always get compliments on anything I make from the recipes. I wanted to give this book as a gift and was glad to finally find it again, no I'm not getting paid to say this, I'm just a housewife who likes to make my own gifts and of all my cookbooks I use this one the most when I start making Christmas gifts... Try it you'll love it.

Reviewer: Andrea from Salinas, California
This book has really good ideas on how to give gifts in creative ways. But where the book excels most is in the recipes. There is a recipe in here that is now mandatory at all my parties. Most are simple to make and even more simple to assemble.

Reviewer: from Greensboro, North Carolina
The recipes in this book are good and there is a fairly broad range of soups included. However, I found the format and pictures to be a bit too precious for this male soup lover. Although it's the recipes that matter, a cook is always influenced by the aesthetics' of one's cookbook, and this one just didn't do it for me. Fortunately, pictures are included here, so you can judge for yourself. I also think that it would make a good gift for fans of country style cookbooks as it is a bit more decorative than the average cookbook.

PICKLES, PEACHES AND CHOCOLATE - LOVED THE BOOK! I've tried six or seven of the tremendous recipes and all have been a success. It has also been the "MOST PICKED UP" of my coffee table books. If you are an accomplished cook or a "Klutz in the kitchen" you'll find this book user friendly and all the recipes and ideas perfect, unique and great host/hostess gifts!

I have most of the books in this series and each one is a delight. Full of ideas for making the gifts you give really stand out. When I make something from one of these books I always take the recipe with me.. I know I will be asked for it! The only draw back is that some of the recipes call for several ingredients and unless you have a well stocked pantry it can be a tad costly. However do not let that stop you. These books are a great source of inspiration and ideas.

A wonderful collection of over 80 delicious recipes and coordinating craft projects are all together in one super volume. Every recipe is guaranteed to be simple to make, tasty, and rewarding. Clear instructions accompanied by full-color photos help to ensure successful completion of gifts the recipients will love.

Great ideas, great fun, great results!  I love this book and all the books within this series. I have been receiving these books for approximately 12 years, starting with my first book "Gifts of Good Taste." I've never been disappointed!

Reviewer: Michelle from Baytown, Texas
I was a bit surprised by this book. It had an abundance of recipes and ideas for the crafter at heart. Many of the ideas are quick, easy and look down right fun!  It's worth the money and is quite handy for a reference book.

Good things come in small packages. Mixes layered in mason jars make charming and delicious gifts to give any time of year ... for wedding favors, hostess gifts, baby showers or to take to cookie exchanges. In this book you will receive 200 recipes, like chocolate chip cookies, soups, spiced cranberry cider mix, etc., which are designed to fit into a standard 1-quart canning jar (many layer upon layer). These gifts make wonderful fundraiser items for schools, churches, and community groups.

Because making a handmade gift takes time--one of our most precious commodities--Sally Pasley Vargas points out in Food for Friends that giving one expresses "something very personal: that we care, that our friends matter, that it is important to sustain our relationships." The recipient of a handmade gift of food gets a bonus: a gift that nurtures, comforts, and offers nourishment. In this beautifully presented work, Vargas offers something for every level of cook, with guidance for everything from wrapping and presenting edible gifts to choosing ingredients and preparing them. Gorgeous color photographs will encourage and motivate even those of us who think that we are less than creative.

I LOVE this book! It is filled with innovative and very attractive ways to package food gifts -- many of which I've never seen mentioned in a book. For example, how to decorate little sugar cubes and give them as gifts to drop in coffee or tea, gifts of unique grains, etc. -- as well as wonderful recipes for homemade cranberry chutney, etc. There HAS to be something for everyone here, for all types of budgets, every conceivable types of food gift, all occasions, etc. I love it.

Reviewer: Robert from Valparaiso, Indiana
I think it's great for those on a fixed income who would like to save a little money on convenience items. It's also great fun to mix up your own mixes and be able to use them anytime. It saves time as well as money.

This book is great for herb gardeners. It gives great ideas on what to make with some of those herbs that you thought was just pretty. Now it has uses. Some are great to keep for yourself and some are great to give as a gifts. The book would make a great gift too.

A few years ago I came across the first edition of USDA's "Complete Guide to Home Canning and Preserving" in a second- hand bookshop. At the time I had zero experience with canning or preserving -- both of which seemed, to me, to be akin to alchemy. The USDA's guide contained all the information I need to get started, and answered many of my questions about the process, the 'science' and my options (such as added pectin vs. no added pectin in jams) I recently acquired this edition of the USDA's guide. It has all the strengths of the first guide, with a few changes to better suit most modern kitchens. Most notably is the listing of measurements using cups and spoons; as opposed to the weight measurements used in the first book. The USDA's guide also provides objective, practical information about selecting jars, canners, storage, ingredients etc. I now have a few books with fancy, tasty canning recipes, but I always use the USDA's Guide as reference . . .especially when purchasing equipment or creating my own recipes.

Enjoy wholesome, healthful foods year round!\ With The Big Book of Preserving the Harvest, even the busiest folks can create a well-stocked pantry of fruits, vegetables, herbs, meats, flavored vinegars, and seasonings. Step-by-step illustrated instructions, informative charts, and a host of delicious recipes make this an indispensable kitchen reference.

Reviewer: jaclynn from Landenberg, PA
I have several canning guides and this is, by far, the best. I was afraid to start canning until I bought this book. What makes this book so superior is there are photographs instead of illustrations. There are photographs detailing every step of the canning process, as well as photo examples of spoiled food (yuk!), prize-winning jars, equipment, etc. For beginners, there's a really easy, tasty spiced pear recipe they walk you through. There's a variety of recipes for jams, jellies, soups, sauces, salsas, chutneys, etc. And to top things off, there's an excellent chart at the back of the book that covers every type of food you can imagine along with its USDA recommendations. If you haven't canned before, and don't have a grandmom that can show you, this is the next best thing.

With more than 300 blue ribbons from state, county, and other fairs to her credit, Amendt is an authority on the subject of preserving and her pantry must be an impressive sight indeed. Here she provides an extremely detailed introduction to home canning, from U-Pick farms and other sources of ingredients to equipment to safety concerns, along with a lengthy troubleshooting section and a chapter on fair competitions. This is followed by more than 200 delectable small-batch preserving recipes, from classics such as Bing Cherry Jam to variations like Caramel Apple Butter to innovations like Margarita Jelly. In addition to jams, jellies, and fruit preserves, Amendt also includes canned fruits and vegetables, sauces and salsas, and pickles and vinegars. Valuable as both a reference and a cookbook, this is highly recommended.

Linda Ziedrich explains the mysteries of pickling and offers the very best, most fail-safe recipes for classic cucumber pickles, and more, including European and Asian cabbage pickles. For novices and veterans alike, this comprehensive reference features handy tables, troubleshooting charts, mail-order sources for supplies, and dozens of original recipes. 85 two-color illustrations.

I've wanted to learn how to cook great soups for several years, but most recipes have inadequate explanations or are too "basic." Not so this one. Since I got it four weeks ago, I've tried eight of the recipes; each was incredible. Moreover, the explanations at the beginnings of each chapter helped me to understand why things are done in certain ways, enabling me to deviate from the recipes with confidence (and success). I've loved the hearty soups so far, and can't wait for summer to try some of the cold soups. Enjoy!!
